Our Evaluation Criteria
Every product we review is assessed against a standardized set of criteria to ensure fair comparisons. We look past the marketing claims and focus on real-world utility.
1. Cooling Performance vs. Claims
We evaluate whether a device actually cools the air or simply moves it. For evaporative coolers, we assess the noticeable temperature drop in the immediate vicinity. We heavily penalize products whose marketing claims defy physics (e.g., claiming a small water-tank fan can cool an entire home).
2. Noise Levels and Acoustic Profile
Because these devices are frequently used in bedrooms and home offices, decibel levels matter. We assess not just the raw volume, but the quality of the noise—a steady white noise is often acceptable for sleeping, while a whining motor or rattling plastic is penalized.
3. Energy Efficiency
We review the power draw (wattage) of each unit. We prioritize devices that offer meaningful comfort without causing a massive spike in monthly electricity bills.
4. Usability and Maintenance
A good appliance shouldn't be a chore to use. For evaporative units, we evaluate how easy it is to refill the water tank, how frequently refills are needed, and how difficult it is to clean the internal filters to prevent mold. For portable ACs, we judge the complexity of the window venting setup.
5. Value for Money
We compare the purchase price against the build quality, longevity, and feature set. The most expensive product is not always the best value, and the cheapest is rarely the most durable.
The Scoring System
Our star ratings (out of 5) are an aggregate reflection of the criteria above.
- 4.5 to 5 Stars: Exceptional products that deliver exactly what they promise. High build quality, reasonable pricing, and accurate marketing.
- 4.0 to 4.4 Stars: Strong performers with minor drawbacks, such as a slightly small water tank or a premium price tag. Still highly recommended for the right user.
- 3.0 to 3.9 Stars: Average products. They function adequately but may suffer from noticeable flaws like excessive noise or cheap materials.
- Below 3 Stars: Products we generally do not recommend, usually due to poor performance, durability issues, or highly deceptive marketing.
